Virginia Historical Society Events and Exhibits
The Virginia Historical Society, the only official historical society of Virginia, commemorated America’s 400th Anniversary with two major exhibits, Pocahontas: Her Life and Legend and Jamestown, Quebec, Santa Fe: Three North American Beginnings.
Pocahontas: Her Life and Legend February 10 - June 24, 2007 What do we know from documented facts, and what myths have unfolded? Yes, the Powhatan Indian princess, Pocahontas, helped rescue Captain John Smith from execution by the Powhatan Indians, but did she marry John Smith, John Rolfe, or both of them, and why? On June 14, Helen Rountree gave a Banner Lecture entitled Pocahontas, Powhatan, Opecancanough: What Became of Them and Why?
Jamestown, Quebec, Santa Fe: Three North American Beginnings March 17 - September 3, 2007 This 4000-square-foot exhibition on the introduction of English, French, and Spanish culture into North America told about the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown in 1607, the first permanent French settlement in Quebec in 1608, and the chartering of the first villa in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1609. In conjunction with this exhibition, there will be a Banner Lecture by James Kelly on April 19 a Gallery Walk on May 23.
